Apologies if this isn't in the right area, i have done a brief search and cant seem to find the answer.
Now and then the speedo will sort of erratically tick or jolt back and forward about 2 centimetres combined with a loud ticking coming from somewhere behind the speedo. coud anyone please aid me with the likely reason for this? thankyou

The whole speedometer will jump back and forth? I presume you mean to say the needle does this? If it were the whole speedo, that would be frightening indeed.

Re: Ticking speedo.
this very same thing happened to me about a year ago and after a few weeks the speedo gave up completely after getting even louder and when I removed the cable I found that it had fraid and stripped the locateing hole where the square part fits into the speedo so I had to buy a new cable and clock

Re: Ticking speedo.
I have had this and found it was the cable wearing, change the cable asap... the shoulders go round and will eventually take the speedo or the cable end will break.... speedo cable is a easy job if not a little fiddly to fit....

Re: Ticking speedo.
I'm glad somebody raised this issue -- I'm having the same problem (alongside problems with the speedometer itself, which I may have solved, may have not) -- so it's good to know the answer. Definitely new cable then? It couldn't be anything within the speedo unit?

Re: Ticking speedo.
Hi
I am experiencing the same problem. I have however fitted a new cable recently.

Re: Ticking speedo.
Perhaps the cable is running dry - and also may not be completely engaged in the speedo - if the knurled nut is not completely tight. Same could apply at the gearbox end..
