1098cc Van Engine (seized)

Hi guys,
I don't know if anyone can help me, I'm looking for a 1098cc Engine for sale to put in my van after having the current one seize up on me yesterday while out and about. I would also like to know if a seized engine does require getting a new one or if it can be repaired?

Probably best if you can describe what happened in a bit more detail - were there any problems with the engine prior to yesterday?

Hi, thanks for moving the post to somewhere more appropriate. The car showed no signs of engine malfunction prior to the sieze up. There was oil showing on the dipstic, no oil pressure warning light and the radiator was full of water. Until we have a mechanic look inside the engine we are unsure exactly what the problem is, only that the engine is seized solid. Momentarily before the car cut out comlpetely, it juddered in much the same way as a faulty fuel pump may affect it. when attempting to start the engine again, it would not turn over. Any help appreciated.

Oh dear - sounds nasty.... Probably does need a complete rebuild...... Best to fit a second hand replacement meantime if you need the van daily.......

A friend of mine who bought a pickup with a seized engine tried tipping a little mixture of diesel and WD40 and poured it down the plug holes and left it for a week and when he turned it over with the starting handle the engine was free and then it started with the key.

A seized engine through standing unused is completely different to one that has seized during use.

First of all take off the rocker box and see if a valve has dropped.
I know it might not have happened in your case but engines that have been left a long time develop moisture in the rocker boxes if stored in damp garages,the rocker arms start to corrode,then if the engines are started and used unchecked the rocker arm can break causing the valve to drop causing the engine to jam.
I have known this to happen a few times.

As above - if it has 'ground to a halt' it's very unlikely to be saveable with a teaspoonful of oil now, although you may 'get it going' again .....as I mention elsewhere -this engine on ebay looks to be fairly priced - but talk to them and form your own opinion. However the feedback is also only 88% - I would ask why that is..... and I would ask if the engine has a NEW oil pump and NEW timing chain fitted......
Edit - just noticed 'jag' above has already listed this one - or take a chance on the used one he also suggests -which has the benefit of coming with carb etc - and can be heard running. And maybe the price could be negotiated down slightly too if bought 'off ebay'. ??

Even at the £185 it's on for you can't really go wrong, as you can hear it running, which is worth doing but it can't be that bad otherwise he'd be shy of letting you hear it. Just wants a good clean!
Personally, if you are on a budget, it's the one I'd go for, the 'A' series is (in my opinion) a quite durable engine, so you should (fingers crossed) get a few years service out of this one as is, provided you keep her serviced and don't let the levels get too low.
Which, in turn, allows you to rebuild your original at your leisure, whilst still enjoying the van.
And a second engine kicking around is always a good idea, mind you with these old girls it's best to have a spare of everything!!

I rang this place up about 18 months ago and asked about their reconditioned engines as I was considering buying one. I asked what had been done and was told "everything that it needs had been done".

So I asked if it had been fitted with a new oil pump - and was told "everything that it needs had been done".
I asked if new cam bearings had been fitted - and was told "everything that it needs had been done".
I asked if a new timing chain & sprockets had been fitted - and was told "everything that it needs had been done".

Then I asked some more details about the thrust bearings and a few other things and I was told "it seems like you know more about these things than me". At that point I put the phone down and rebuilt my old engine myself.

Of course, I'm not saying don't use the company, but just reporting on my conversation with them and what I then did.

Hope it won't take me too long because my Grandad would quite like his garage back

Hehe Well it took four days and it's now back up and running - one or two bits to sort (it keeps backfiring!), but, I WILL get there. Will try to upload the pictures of each stage (if it will be of interest to anyone)
