MM 918cc rear axle, a cautionary tale.

Post by smithskids »

My 51 MM axle has been a little whiney since I last looked at it so I decided to strip it out and check the backlash etc. By leaving the brake backplates on complete with brake cylinders it came out quite quickley as you don't have to undo the back springs or bleed the brakes. I adjusted the backlash by reshimming and the crown wheel position by making a new spacer where the crown wheel assy sits in the housing. I then blued the Pinion to see that the teeth were bedding in the center of the crown wheel teeth, all well. Boxed the job up and the whine was still there, though not as bad. It was only after careful thought I realised I had forgotten to blue the crown wheel to see wheather the marks on the pinion were in the center.A job for next month no doubt.
