Car not going uphill but fine on the flat

Post by normajay99 »

Hello to the Morris magicians again!!! About 6-8 weeks ago I posted my problem with my 1098cc Morris (H reg) Its fine on the flat but going up any incline has no power at all and splutters all the time. I replaced a leaking fuel line from tank to carburettor and at the same time checked fuel output from pump which was about 1.25 pts per minute. Presume from advice that it was ok!!! Have stripped down and replaced all the pump parts and have checked and temporarily removed the fuel line filter. Have adjusted the carburettor as shown in manual, also engine speed on tickover as well as lifting piston etc etc. They all seem to be ok but as soon as I test it on an incline its the same as ever!! I am seriously thinking of emigrating to Holland where theres no hills at all, or I will never get Betsy on the road again.....After many years of not being used it looks as though its staying that way!! If anyone lives near me (Newcastle) and has a clue I would love for them to have a look at her...

Still sounds like fuel starvation. Stop on a hill when the problem starts and remove the top of the float chamber and see what the fuel level is. Also take your plugs out after a run and look at the colour to see if it is running weak.
Does this start as soon as you hit an incline or do you get up a little way then lose power?

I had the very same problem with mine in that every time I got part way up any sort of steepish hill it would splutter to a stop. After a lot of investigation the cause turned out to be an intermittent blockage of the armoured flexible pipe between the pump and the carb, caused by a partially loose piece of the internal rubber pipe acting as a restrictive flap.

Have you checked the compressions of the engine cylinders?? Could just be general worn out engine......or ignition timing problems (did we ask already about the mechanical advance?) . But carb problem is still the most likely! Just how fast will it go 'on the flat' ? Do a full throttle run......which prompts me to ask - have you checked that 'full throttle' at the pedal does indeed fully open the carb butterfly? And does the carb piston lift fully to clear the carb bore?
