Morris Eight or Ford Model Y

Post by Audrey1955 »

Hi guys,

keeping the minor, but i do like the look of the morris eight, series 1&2. At the time, its rival was the Ford model Y. Just wondered which you guys prefer?

Don't even think about a model Y. The mechanical brakes and transverse leaf spring will frighten the life out of you. I had a similar choice in 1970 and chose the Morris 8 series I. We still have ours and it is still up and running :D :D :D

Hi Audrey,

It's just a wild guess, but I think I know what the answer may be.
Possibly the opposite to that that you would get to the same question on the Ford site!

Hee hee.

Phil. ;)

If you can't afford a car, buy a Ford.

My dad had a Morris Eight in the late 70s early 80s it was so cheap the previous owner gave it to my dad as it was going to be scrapped. He sold it for £200 in the early 80s and it is now on the road along with a 1963 Morris Minor Convertible which he bought from a breakers yard in the 70s and sold that and that is on the road.I dont know if it anyone owns it that is in the owners club the reg was AMP 533 A.

Never experienced a Ford Y, but followed a Morris 8 saloon on the way to work yesterday. It was making very good progress and going well. A good 45mph cruising speed ont he open road and a particualry stiff climb and couple of bends only slowed him down to 30ish. I wouldn't have been going significantly faster with an empty road in front of me.
cheers

I personally have a bit of a 'thing' for the Morris 8 Series E and I will have one one day, but I also like the Anglia E494A & E04A. Out of the two (Morris vs. Ford) it's Morris all the way for me. I think the Morris looks far nicer and is more advanced for the time than the Ford.

Going back to your original question though, I can see the agony of the choice. The Ford Y is a very very nice looking car and I could be very tempted, but next to a Morris 8 Series 1 or Pre-Series I think the Morris would win. But for looks it would have to be a saloon.

So no real surprise then from another Morris Man. I would go for the Morris over the Ford. :D :D

Referring to the car of course - but the wife has worn pretty well, too.
