Traveller Side Windows

It's time to replace the side window runners on my Traveller as I'm getting sick of the puddle in the rear footwell every time it rains.
My question is: where do you put the sealant (Dum Dum)? I remember reading that it only goes between the inner runner and the wood trim which kinda makes sense. Anyone got any tips for keeping the water out long-term? Also, what's the deal with the chrome edged runners, just to look pretty...?

If you are repalcing the window runners it's wise to pay attention as follows:

When you remove the inner wood trim get rid of all the mastic and get new screws as well, otherwise it won't seal properly when it goes back

When you remove the old runners try to get the old screws out, but accept you might not and then just carefully chisel them flat.

Make sure the drain holes in the timber waist rail are thoroughly cleaned out before you fit the new runners, otherwise the pool may well return! I also paint the wood rebate with cuprinol.

Fit the new runners, chrome edge looks pretty, but contributes little else AFAIK.

The mastic just goes between the inner trim and the waist rail. Usually two stripes at 1/3 and 2/3 depth seems to work.

ive done mine this summer ... ive had to take the capping off a couple of times to get it totally waterproof ... like johnm says do two lines of dum dum, but mainly make sure they are both pretty evenly thick all the way along - i sort of smeared the sealant in well along where the runner meets the wood. you probably dont need any more dum dum except at the ends, but just stick it anywhere you think might be vulnerable, its cheap and it works .. (remember to put plenty round all the screw holes) . i agree its worth making sure all the channels are well cuprinolled and give them 3 or 4 coats of varnish, they get totally soaked . ..

the chrome just looks pretty, i used the normal stuff on the inner and the outer, its half the price.

well worth doing, my windows leaking had caused the wheel arch to rot from the inside !! ... and it gets under your back seat ...

Thanks for the advice guys, I'll probably do it this weekend to keep the winter rain out, and then re-do the sealant it in the summer when I don't have to cut it with a chisel!

remember you have to make holes in the new window runners to let the water get through to the drain holes in the timber !! ...
