Suspicious Speedo ..

I have started to worry about my speedo ... One of the first things I noticed about the car was that the fuel guage did not give 100% movement ... Changed the sender .. still the same ..

Then I noticed that where the 50 is there is a green light ...

When I took it out the bezel seemed to be made of a part cut from somewhere else by hand with shears. also the regulator was bolted on wierdly and the retaining lugs have been braised ...

Is it possible that I have a Mini speedo ? I'm slighly concered as the wheels of the mini would have been much smaller so is the speed reading wrong ?

Yes it sounds like you have a mini speedo as the minor does not have a light in the 50mph but the mini does.

What I don't understand is WHY .... When I took it out it is obvious that it's been customised quite seriously to make it fit, lugs have been braised onto the sides and the regulator has been butchered to fit. How much is a second hand speedo ? I have bids on one at £2 on ebay at the moment .. surely a fiver from a scrappy ?

Very very odd .. as is the bathroom carpet ..

Yes up to a tenner depending on condition and make sure you get the right one, if you have the later car with the black speedo there are 2 types depending on age the ealier one that does no thave kmh and the later one with, if you are lucky the often still have the fuel guage and regulator attached.

well at least they didn't include the bathroom tiles - mind you, there's a lot to be said for a wipe clean interior. i'm sure there's a v12 custom moggy somewhere in ARKANSAS with a ceramic tiled interior currently lurking on ebay

mmm - sorry. bringing it back to subject - what colour should the full beam light be on the mog speedo? red or blue?

depends on the year. post '62 ish I think should be blue.

Unless the bulbs are the wrong way round as can happen so that ignition is blue and mainbeam red.

I thought that was the idea of a moggie's .. we can just drift slowly round taking in all possible points of conversation without worrying about the destination ..

mmm - i've got red lights for mainbeam AND ignition/oil - right for a 57? i also want to get the flashing indicator stalk like i used to have on the last mog - i keep missing the flashy light in the speedo

If you mean that you have the non self cancel type of indicator
stalk then you could try fitting a 12 volt buzzer which is teed off of
the indicator lamp. You cannot forget that the indicator is 'on' then.

...if you can get a loud enugh buzzer. Maplins do them for 99p, (I used two), but they're a bit quiet.

This is sort of related.

My indicator stalk is the self-cancelling variety (alledgedly). However, the cancelling mechanism on the indicator doesn't line up with the nobble on the steering column. I made one side line up by experimental bending (since the stalk's broken and needs replacement anyway (and I have a replacement!)) Having bent the little angled bit of metal attached to the spring it now cancels turning right, but I'm certain this is not what I should have to do.... So, um, anyone got a suggestion as to why?

well - didn't you think to move the whole unit instead of bending the probes??
It fixes to the column outer sleeve, so..... undo the 2 nuts that clamp the outer sleeve and move it ;-)

Make sure that when you tighten it up, the lump on the colum shaft is lined up with the probes, and also that when the steering is straight that the lump is mid way between the probes (rotate the column sleeve, but if you don't like the position, then remove the column shaft clamp bolt from the rack stub and move the column round a spline or 2.

When it's all lined up, retighten the 2 clamp bolts evenly (and refit the column shaft clamp bolt!)

Then have a look at the lump on the column shaft - you can adjust the height. If its too far out it will knock the probes hard causing wear. if it's too far in the indicator won't self cancel.

Thing is, it appears to be prevented from moving any further by the clampy bit that holds the black casing around it. Or is that the bit that moves, I could never see how to move it..... (It also, occasionally fouls the black casing thing (although it's broken on my car, so that doesn't really matter). I'm obviously going to have to have another proper look at it at some point

the clampy bit that holds the black casing isn't meant to move (I'm wondering if we're now talking at cross purposes) - the thing that it is clamped to is the bit you need to move.

well, see, if I recall correctly, the clampy bit that holds the black casing prevents me from moving it (the stalk et assembly) any further in the direction in which it would need to move to be able to hit the little nobble on the steering wheel.
