Teal Blue Van and Pickup at Rockingham Steam ..

Post by Morris Mike »

Rockingham steam Rally.

Phillip Horne took along his Teal Blue pickup and I arrived in my Teal blue van.

We thought it an ideal opportunity to photograph them together.
Manufactured in the same year (mine was in the showroom until Sept 1972.) can you spot the subtle differences.

Obviously Morris were trying to use up useful parts. Both vehicles are totally original before and after restoration so no bits and bobs added or taken away.

Hi,
Chrome center strip on bonnet and bumper?
I would say the wheels are your own addition.
Best wishes,
Mike.

I would have guessed the pick up is a bit younger, with no bonnet flash and a car type full width bumper blade, albeit painted not chrome. Was the van bumper blade originally body colour? Never seen one like that before - maybe a day when they ran out of silver paint....
cheers

Correct.
My van was totally original when found. It was restored using all the original body items i.e bonnet flash, short bumper blade, crinkle grill etc..

Philips pickup was also restored using the original parts, but at concourse shows has been told that the bumper iron is wrong,(too long),and the bonnet flash is missing, but the pickup has been known from new and was always like that.

We think that nearing production end they were using up parts from the bin to finish off the vehicles in 1971.

As for the colour of the bumper blade, before spaying it I thought it blended into the van better body colour than silver which makes it stand out more.
Seeing it next to the pickup I like the idea more.

Some folk fit chrome bumper irons.

Yes 13" midget wheels. They are for sale if anyone interested. I have a set of origonal van wheels LP915 IIRC :D

I agree chrome bumper is naff, but not high up my list at the moment. On with the engine but needs a clutch :([frame]Image[/frame]

Doesn't say much for concours judges if it was picked up for no bonnet flash. I'd have thought it was reasonably well known that the last LCVs, especially post office vans, didn't have bonnet flashes. I've got a couple of bonnets myself, one NOS from the end of LCV production with no holes for the flashes. Hadn't come across a car bumper blade being used before but its quite believable - I mean from the production point of view a bumper is a bumper and certainly no one would have noticed when it was new.

The VERY last mailvan had a 5 series cab/engine, but a 4 series body.

Bonnet flashes mixed in with NO flashes or 3 chrome blanking plugs.

My K reg ex-postal has civvy cab dr liners when it should have had
steel ones.

Always exceptions to the rule.
Further investigations uncovered it was an inside job!!

SJT 908K aka 327369 or mine?

Mate saw the former several times back in the 80s, think it
suffered acc damage & was scrapped.

Loads of vans about in the '80s, could be bought for next to
nothing...PPR 994K was up for sale for £400 in 1991.

BFK 323L, where are you now?!

H.G.Wells & his barn sized time machine
