fitting new axle to prop shaft

Hello,

I have had to remove my axle, as the diff was leaking, and the spring is rather loose in its shackle bushes, and welding required. Thankfully I had another axle, so I reconditioned this one and will be doing a swap. But the question I now have is how do I know to fit it correctly onto the original prop shaft. There are no markings, yet every book always insists you refit as it came off. With another axle obviously this is difficult. So, how should I choose the correct position when fitting? Ideas?

My prop has been off and on many times over the years, different diffs, axle off, gear box change. Never worried about marking and replacing in exact position (impossible somtimes), always been fine, as long as the prop is balanced and the nuts/bolts are tight you shoud be fine.

It (the prop) can only ever be fitted in two positions. Fit the new diff, and connect up, give it a drive. If there are any vibrations that were not there before, try rotating the prop 180 degrees.

Is it two or four positions? I thought it would fit every 90 degree turn.

Nope. The holes aren't spaced every 90 degrees, no idea why not, maybe something to do with getting the bolts past the UJ. So only 180.

Thanks for your replies and insight. I never really noticed the holes being somewhat differently spaced, but I will measure and just fit it back up and see how I go. Cheers and happy motoring
