Has it threaded? If it is threaded then the hole in the gearbox will have to be drilled and retapped/helicoiled, very difficult job as the casing is aluminium and prone to cracking!

As a definitely non permanent solution a cable tie round the retainer plate and hooked onto the gearbox in some fashion will get you mobile but don't expect it to last!

Re: What i must do now
To add a helicoil is not so hard - if you find someone who has done it many times...

The other option is to re-thread the hole to a slightly bigger size and use a larger bolt- this way is really not so nice!

Re: What i must do now
As above - cut a new thread next size up - probably metric will be easiest. But an easier solution may be to simply use a longer screw of the same size as the existing one.

Re: What i must do now
Exactly what I did, about 3/16" longer and works a treat, as long as you don't over tighten.
Should be ready for tea time.
Re: What i must do now
I can't remember off the top of my head - are these 1/4" UNF or 5/16" UNF? I don't think they are coarse thread - although in aluminium - they really should be......and then they wouldn't strip so easily.

Sandun - take out one of the other screws (not 'nuts') - and compare the thread with the long one you have from another gearbox.

Re: What i must do now
I am surprised that nobody has recommended just putting a slightly larger bolt in, tightening and leaving alone.
