That is a 'burn' - once there is a space - the hot gases soon errode away more and more of the valve. As you indicate - worry more about the condition of the seat...... And in future set the 15 thou gap -and check it!

UPDATE

For anyone whose interested...

Burnt valve swapped with one from donor engine, head cleaned, valves lapped and all new gaskets fitted. Runs a treat again.

Brakes had a build up of something caked on, either dust or there was a coating on the drums that I didn't clean off. Whichever, a clean up with wet/dry sorted them out as well.
