Mystery Carb.

Post by Boomlander »

Hi all,
Obtained an SU carb in lovely condition but can't find any reference to it with regard to fitting in the Minor. It looks like an HS2 with the pipe feed from the float bowl to the carb but it has AUC8450 stamped on the body where I was expecting to see AUC944 yet it has the correct float chamber number AUC1390.
Can anyone let me know if this carb is compatible with my 948 engine? :-?

Let's see a picture - is the float bowl at the correct angle and on the correct side?

As long as the float bowl is vertical when it's on the manifold, it's fine.

Note the black jet and comparatively small size - I'd say mid-1960s humble HS2. I very much doubt this will fit a 948 as the manifold mounting is different (bolts at top to bottom). Possibly from a transverse-engined BMC 1100??

Top and bottom is exactly correct for a 948/1098........ It will fit....transverse engines used exactly the same manifold as the 1098 Minor engine.

Interesting... Boomlander needs to carry out a practical test and report the findings!

Until the transverse went to the larger (much better) HS4 carb......with the diagonal mounting holes on the manifold.

If you rotate or change the float chamber adaptor you can position the float chamber so that it is vertical when the carb is bolted to whatever HS2 manifold you are using.
Check the needle number to find the carb application

Just cleaned up the existing carb on Jethro and lo and behold.....the numbers match!
AUC8450 already running on the engine although with the jet adjustment right at the top of its travel the car is still running too rich.
I may have to fit a different needle if the replacement carb does not adjust lean enough.
Thanks for all the input folks :D
