How to get my new Grease Gun Pumping?

Post by james.ed »

Finally, after many years loyal service, my old grease gun packed up and lost its 'spring'. Not so good if you need to get it to work!

I've got a new one and its all loaded with lovely grease, and has spring, however I just can't get it to pump the stuff out the end. The handle feels like is offering no resistance and nothing comes out. I've tried to follow the air block removing instructions but so far no luck. Anyone know how to get these things going?

I would have said it wants the air bleeding but if you've gone through that procedure, I don't know. You have the spring pushing the grease I presume?

Sounds like air in it to me, what happens when you open the air bleed screw?

Don't know what "air block removing instructions" that you've followed. I was taught to remove the pipe or hose that's coming out of the gun and then pump it until you get a solid stream of grease coming out, then re-install the pipe or hose, pump some more 'till you get grease coming out the chuck.

easy way to get rid of air is crack the handle end a bit and pump or press the bleed nipple

Thanks all - Not sure its high tech enough to have a bleeding valve, but I'll take the tube off and try and get it to pump the grease.

I've seen quite a few modern guns without any bleed valve / air screw. The instructions (poorly translated from Chinese) usually tell you to load the grease and then pump the handle. I've never managed to get one to work; and stick to older, quality units that have the bleed screw and operate without any problems. It wouldn't be so bad, but these new things are being sold (not always cheaply) as serious tools; yet clearly have faults.
