Wheel Refurb

Hi guys

May have been asked before but I couldnt find anything "exactly" relevant when I did a search

What primer and paint would be best to use on refurbing the wheels on my minor.

Would I have to remove all the paint? (They are currently silver and I would like to paint them OEW) or could I just wire brush, prime then paint?

Any tips would be useful.

id get the tyres took off and get them sandblasted and powder coated. cost around £100 to £120 a set depending where you go.... wire brushing and repainting works but doesnt last and rust always comes back, they get all the weather and are old rims these days....

I would like to keep costs as low as possible thats all Looking for a DIY job really.

Hi,
I paid £25 per wheel to get mine bead blasted - (do not use sand, it gets in everywhere, is very hard to get back out and lays in other problems for the future) - not the cheapest method to strip them but extremely effective, they emerged looking like new (unpainted) wheels!
I then had mine galvanised and powder coated, so hopefully they will last.
You could then spray them yourself, just make sure you use a good quality undercoat (I'd use one that was zinc based).

Soda blasting cheaper an better and a good powder coat

Just use a wire brush in a leccy drill - followed by Dulux undercoat and then Dulux magnolia gloss. Works well - best done on a nice warm day for fast drying - and yes, take care to NOT get paint on the tyres........

i cleaned mine up with a wire cup brush on an angle grinder..few coats of zinc rich primer and then a 50 : 50 mix of gloss white magnolia

As above - remove all loose paint with wire brush, then primed. I used appliance paint in white from Halfords. It's very hard wearing and a large can will do 5 wheels.

Thanks for the good tips so far guys. I've got the tools to strip the paint now. I was thinking of buying OEW paint in a spray can from somewhere like ESM. Would that be good too?

Mine were shot blasted by a mate, etch primed and then finished in OEW in rattle cans from ESM, 2 years later, not a speck of rust showing. So yes the cans of OEW should be alright.
