It has been swapped for a known 'good box'.
Garage say likely cause was the bearings where the prop shaft enters box. Or something. Box was beginning to hop out of gears so I figure it was time up anyway.
Unbelievably quiet, smooth journey home. Pity I got stuck behind a Micra....
