Car clock repair

Post by jagnut66 »

Hi,
I have a classic 1930's 'Smiths' wind up car clock in my car, that has now stopped working. I tried my local watch and clock shop but having tried twice they don't seem to have got anywhere, they return it to me saying it should be okay now but seem to have made no difference whatsoever.
The clock is fully wound, will tick for a little while then stops. The other problem with with it is that the regulator doesn't seem to regulate it.
Can anyone on here recommend a decent repairer who could fix my clock for me?
Many thanks,
Mike.

I have a similar clock no 21705 with a wind up bezel which is getting stiff to turn. There is an excellent clock restorer in Caversham, Reading which I intend taking my clock to when I go that way to collect my radiator from repair. It may be a bit out of your way though.[frame]Image[/frame]

There are two areas that are key.(no pun intended)
Never wind to the stop, a little and often only, also people forget to lubricate them, a drop of thin oil can make all the difference.
I have a very basic victorian wind up clock at home that simply got dry, a touch of oil brought it back to life.
After lubrication try getting it in your hand and gently tip it from side to side.

Don't lubricare the gears just the pivot points. If you want to clean it remove the hands and dial, suspend the movement over a bowl of highly volatile cleaner , not in it, and leave it for a day then lubricate the pivot points with very thin clock oil and like the man says don't over wind it :)
