wiper moter and fuses!

Post by zacseaman »

After packing with grease in the wiper mechanism I noticed a free wire hanging from the box that I found was supposed to be in the top hat! Upon researching this I found out that this helps park the wipers! I never knew minor wipers went back down when I turn them off, brilliant I thought! So this morning I went and decided to put the wire into the top hat clasp. All secured and put back together. Time for the moment of truth... pull the wipers out and bang the fuse goes. So I try another fuse bang another one goes. Take the wire out of top hat and let it dangle like it was before hidden and wipers work fine. Can anybody hep me out!!

Sounds like the basic wiring is not correct - and has been bodged up by removing the auto park 'earth' wire. What wires go into the motor?

Have a close look on both sides of the top hat, on mine the washer that keeps the self park thing insulated had disappeared.
Quite tricky to fix as it's riveted through, mine is still disconnected :(

But surely that would just keep the motor running - not park?

I suspect the problem lies in the black wire - remove it and try again...

I removed the black wire (apologise as the black wire headed into the loom with the others not to pump) and then had no wipers at all. For some reason it wont let me upload any photos on here :-? but looking at my wiper motor I have a (black/green wire) above the green wire on the motor could this be the problem? (then black wire is to the right of the two if looking over the engine from drivers wing) If I swap these (green, green and black)over will I cause damage? im awful with electrics!

The green wire should be live with Ign ON. The green/black runs back to the switch - which earths it when the wipers are to run. Once the motor starts - the gear wheel rotates - and the motor earths itself through the contact on the lid - until it runs to the blank section. At this point - if the switch has been put OFF - the motor stops. If the switch is still ON of course - it keeps on running. The black wire will be required then - it was the connection to the fuel pump that worried me... It may simply be that the motor is seized/burned out - hence the fuse blowing.

The motor itself isnt burnt out, it works fine with the top hat wire disconnected, its just when I attach the top hat wire when I turn the wipers on it blows the fuse. I swapped the green and green/black wires over (to how they should be viewing others photos) and the wipers ran on their own with the ignition on with top hat wire connected and wipers switch push to off. I think as mentioned above the washer is missing so earths through the body of the top hat continually making the wipers run. Maybe the previous owner swapped the green with the green/black wire over so the wipers didnt run all the time!? Hmm, I think I will leave it like markyB and accept defeat. Would have been nice to have self parking wipers. My car is just training my hand eye coordination!
