Glove box lids? Series 2?

Is there anyway to attach a glove box lid on a series 2 with just the open boxes? Its just I have a stereo system in the glove box behind the steering wheel and would like to hide it away!

Ive searched, but not come up with how to do it and if its even possible???

The flat 948 lids should fit

I think it'd be difficult to put a stereo and glovebox lid in there. The lid can only open as far as the steering column which is about an inch and a half gap, making access to stereo controls difficult.
Wish I could get a pic but I took the one off my '58 saloon.

Right OK then. Thnaks for your answers. Ive already got a stereo system in the glove box, but didnt know that a lid would only open a certain amount. Its just ashame ive got no way of hiding it.

There is nothing to stop you using it as a push fit, and taking it off rather than using it as a glovebox. Just remember to take it off before you drive otherwise that metal glovebox will fall onto your knee on a vigorous corner.

Sorry if this sounds stupid, but what do you mean by a push fit? Can you buy these or would i need to make one?

Unless you move the stereo/etc to the passenger side and fit the flat fronted glove box cover to this. We've done this on my Traveller which originally came with open glove boxes.

I mean you could use the glovebox from a 948 but instead of mounting it via its hinges, make it a 'push fit' so it can be removed when using the stereo. Not as ideal, but could work.

Tis is the type of glove box cover you need (thanks Declan for the picture) This should fit your open glovebox - you just need to drill small holes to fit the hinge screws.

thanks. so its the flat glove box lids i need to search for then? do these usually come with hinges, or if not, where would i purchase them?

You can get them second hand (not available new) either from Ebay (none there I've just checked for you) or from other members. Put a request in the Wanted section for the complete thing "early flat fronted 948 glove box lid" - either passenger or driver - your choice. It should have the chrome surrounds and hinges plus the magnetic closure etc. The screws can be bought from DIY places.
