It Moves! (Video to prove it...)

Post by oilypaws »

A couple of weeks ago, I reached a major milestone... my project moved under its own power (after 3 years off the road and complete disassembly for welding and painting)!

As you can see, it has only one seat and no doors... or floorpan... but who needs those, right?

The engine sounds sweet, but it's drowned out by the gearbox. There's some good audio in the movie of the gearbox noise. I just picked up another box today which is supposed to be better.

So here's the video:

Woohoo!

Looks great!
Is there oil in the gearbox?
1st gear will always be noisier than the other forward gears as it's got straight
cut teeth.

Running without the floor is a very harsh test for the amount of gearbox noise, even a good one won't be silent.

ditto - the gearbox will be much louder with nothing between you and it!
Gearbox noise is WAY louder with no oil (and it's life will be much shorter too...)

Definitely! I just drained it and filled it up to the level of the filler hole.

I don't think the metal that came out on the drain plug was normal though! I'd describe it as like coarse sand.

Yeah, I'd noticed that they always whine in 1st. The grinding and clunking noises are not so good though. Anyway I now have another gearbox to put in.

Thanks for comments!

Good luck with the new box, they all look very similar on the outside.

The noise is normal.
I had an old German tractor from that age, to help around the house while I was building it.
The same noise was there, only with more background power because of the number of gearboxes.

When you was driving on the road, a high gearbox sound was always there, and yes, also straight teeth's for a lot of the parts between the Diesel engine and the wheels.[frame]Image[/frame]

Nice Tractor! :)

I purchased a 948 engine and gearbox (for $52!) which had been swapped out of another car because the engine was sounding bad. The mechanic said the gearbox was fine (and they had a Morrie as their run around car and he seemed to know what he was talking about). So here's hoping it's at least a bit better!

Of course since I'm taking it out, I should replace the clutch - which will be $300 or so. Fortunately I found a local supplier who has them (and brake parts) in stock.
