Pick Up Third Brake Light

Post by ET_in_black »

I like the idea of having a third "high-level" brake light, so I've just fitted one in my Pick Up.
Here's a picture of it from inside the cab; it's fixed to a couple of small metal brackets which are screwed to the frame around the window:

And here's the view from outside:

I think this is a good idea. I've added a third high level brake light to our saloon after having been rear-ended!
I think many people now expect to see a high level brake light and get confused when they don't :)

They must have been having a very interesting conversation on their mobile not to notice a Morris slowing down!

I can see the advantage of having a high level brake light , but why do people sit in traffic with their foot on the brake pedal ?
The dazzle can be horendous on a wet night ( probably not from a minor though). Folk dont seem to use the handbrake
other than for parking these days, mores the pity.

Very true, it used to be limited to automatics, now everyone does it, is it how people are taught these days?

Just ordered a rear brake light for the Moggie now :D
I thought a horrible LED thing would look out of place but better safe than sorry, also it has sticky pads to mount it so it doesn't have to stay.
And for less than a tenner on ebay  :D

Confusion being caused by the two brain cells cancelling each other out!

No, even though the bumper was so badly bent we couldn't open the boot, we decided not to claim. The plastic bumpered car that hit the Morris didn't look too good, apparently.
The driver thought that the Minor was still moving and didn't slow down... :o

Hi, thinking of getting third/high level brake light for my traveller. This may seem a silly question, but is there any ruling on where it is fitted across the car, i.e does it have to be in the middle or can I fit to offside door window. If it needs to be in the middle I will need to make up something to support it low enought in the middle to be seen below the wood on the top of the doors.

Fit two = one on each door window - as high as possible if you want them to be noticed......

After looking at the backs of a lot of modern vans, they seem to be mostly fitted on the nearside door. So I purchased a light that has a bulb not LEDs as this had an ajustable bracket. This was fitted with minor changes to the route of the wire through the bracket to the wood frame at the back of my traveller, not to the door. It is low enough to be see in the window of the near side door.[frame]Image[/frame][frame]Image[/frame]

Andy,

I'm very interested in the third brake light you've fitted for your Morris Traveller. Please could you tell me where you bought the lights from? Recently I've fitted the larger indicator and brake/tail light lamps to my Traveller. But I think the high level light provides even greater safety.

Thanks,

I purchased the light on ebay from Auto Supplies Newry back in January 2013. There were a number availble from them and other sellers in January, but I cannot find any now.

This light is a pod and is about 100mm deep and that was the reason for not fitting to the door as I belived it would be in the way more that fitting to the inner frame.

I did not want to use LED version, but there are a number of LED types availble see item 190482325032 put in watch list and then look for similar from the more action pull down menu.

You could try contacting Auto Supplies Newry (autosuppliesnewry on eBay) to check if they had any more avaible.

My traveller is used daily and I fitted a high level brake light a couple of years ago - along the bottom of the o/side rear window.
Really pleased I did - so many idiots travel so close I don't think they could see the normal lights because they're low down. I was trundling along at an indicated 55 in a 50 limit (sat navigation said 50!) and some girl was about 6ft off the rear bumper smoking a fag and on the phone! I just dabbed the brake pedal enough to put my brake light on as I was approaching the roundabout and she dropped the fag in her lap and threw the phone out of the window!! Hilarious!. She's followed on the same bit of dual carriageway a few times since and keeps her distance now so she obviously got the message and learned a valuable lesson wouldn't have seen the normal lights at all...
I know it's not original but in modern traffic I do think that improved lights are a good idea for regularly used old vehicles - I bet a lot of people don't know what trafficators mean!
