Re: Work/education
If at all possible these days I'd highly recommend doing 1 year of "work experience" or whatever it's called these days.
No matter what your degree has on it this says has a clue about the real world and can hold down a job too.
Even better it will give you contacts in the "real world".

Re: Work/education
Usually known as a sandwich course, or placement year. But also consider a summer placement rather a whole year out, as a couple of these can look as good, less of a commitment, and possibly more contacts.

Re: Work/education
well i would say engineering is one of the most solid career choices due to the fact we will always near engineers, and mechanical engineering is quite a broad qualification. one of my teachers gained a masters in mechanical engineering and went from working in the merchant navy (loads of money) to working in the middle east (LOADS OF MONEY) to being my lecturer (still £40000<)
dont know the exact ratio though.
thanks for the info guys, much appreciated

Re: Work/education
There are plenty of these stats online, but I think its not really a fair comparison, since engineering is seen as a respected degree, and as with things like maths, many people will go on to do very good jobs just not directly linked.irmscher wrote:Just wondering what ratio of students gain employment in there chosen profession ie mechanical engineering is there enough jobs ?

It's not all about money!
Doing a job you enjoy is worth more than gold, spending 8 hours a day doing a job that you find meaningless or hate is hell on earth, well pretty grim at least.

Re: Work/education
I work for the BBC as a Studio Manager at World Service. Before that I was a radio producer for LBC 97.3. My moggy was a regular feature! I was quite smug when I nicked Chris Evans' parking space outside Radio 2 yesterday Well, Mog looked better than his Aston Martin!

Re: Work/education
I have missed this up till now I *just* fit in to the Young members definition ;)
I did Chemical Engineering at Imperial College (which I didn't complete for a number of reasons), then went and did an HND in Mechanical Engineering at Central Sussex College, and I am now doing a part time degree in Engineering & Management at Portsmouth.
I have done bar/restaurent/hotel work, van driving & maintainance at a garden machinery place, factory work, warehouse work, van driving for a motor factor and I am now a Project Engineer (site based) for a company specialising in Nuclear Decommissioning. As I type this I am at Trawsfynydd power station (decommissioning site now) looking at adapting a waste processing plant.
