I did say to apply the handbrake during the towing.. I've never had a stuck plate! But the towing in gear is highly recommended as being relatively 'safe' - and by using a low gear - the engine force is much muliplied. However I do believe the heat from the engine is important too - and will be present in the 'engine running' scenario. Try them all!

Had a wee tinker with the car today ,had it driving around the farm getting gears without the clutch pedal , with the clutch pedal still fully down.
It drove so nice ,im starting to think theres maybe something else wrong with the clutch ? , still no pressure at the clutch pedal ,is there anything else that could be overlooking ? , is it down to adjustment ? , maybe im not doing something properly ?.. its just so weird ,starting to do my head in now ....anyone have any other ideas to what could be wrong ?..

Hello again , i had a wee tinker with the car today , got it driving around the farm after starting it in gear , managed to change gears ok inbetween revs , driving fine so thats something .
Is there a possibility that theres something else wrong with the clutch ? ,something ive missed ?..
Theres still no pressure on the clutch pedal ...
Can it be adjustment thats at fault or is it simply the clutch has seized and isint for budging ?..
Its starting to drive me nuts now

The clutch pedal at the moment is still very soft , with the car running on tick over it will allow you to select rev without too much resistance ?, im thinking its maybe clutch adjustment now could the clutch have freed off but due to wrong adjustment im not able to select forward gears as easy ?.

no pressure on the clutch pedal ...
Do you mean no resistance to being pushed?
If so it sounds like it needs lots of adjustment or something has broken.
Have a look at the mechanism underneath while someone pushes the pedal.

Yea the clutch pedal is very easy to push down , had a look at it from underneath with some one working the pedal , its moving the leaver but not by very much ,also when i fitted the new engine there was 2 big nuts washer on the gear box adjusting arm ?, which werent supposed to there , i removed them at the start .
So i will have a go at adjusting the rod a wee bit at a time see if it works ? .tomorrow .

I think you'll find there isn't enough adjustment and the nut washers need to be reinstated.
With the return spring removed you can feel how much free play there is, just adjust it up until there is still some free play, 1cm at the operating lever should do.

Just about every part of the operating mechanism is prone to wear and it all adds up until there is no more adjustment left.

Don't get disheartened at this late stage, teething problems are normal when putting an old car back on the road.
It's all part of the fun, honest :)

Just to be clear - you now say you can select gears and drive the thing? Does therefore seem like simple adjustment problem.

No its not selecting gears unless you give it a rev inbetween gears after you have started it in1st gear by turning on the ignition it jumps into life , wit the exception of rev gear which it seems to slip into a bit easier, still with a good old crunch .?.

Obviously the 'two nuts' that you only now tell us about  were there for a reason........ Put them back.

the reason being that all the linkage, spindle, arms, bushes are worn and the nuts were additional adjustment AS bmc says put them back on to test, but you will need to look at the linkage and do a proper fix with new bushes etc.

 Guilty as charged!
I have a tendency to start diagnosing from the title and stop reading when I thinks I've sussed it.

Didn't you pause to think that the extra bits weren't just decorative?

Afternoon folks ,what a busy day ive had ,all positive :D , well thats the clutch issue sorted , i was mucking about with it today ,just kicking it over on the starter ,heard a lovely clunk ,after much fiddling with the adjuster arm and ree fitting the two big nuts ,hay presto 1 working morris minor thats now driving and getting all gears .
It was also the cars first test drive with the new engine plus showing off his new paint job ,test drive went well car didnt miss a beat with the exception of a dodgy indicator that works now and then .
I wasent content on doing that i also made a start on my 62 minor ruby stripping out her passenger front suspension , well the lot in fact ....
So a productive dry day worth being off for , so its back to using the blue minor and parking up my marina , better mpg with the morris .
Thanks to all for the help support it was much apreciated ...thank you
