Minor praise?

Post by JOWETTJAVELIN »

The following excerpt is from the March 1966 edition of Practical Motorist.

'One of the P.M. staffmen has just sold his 110 m.p.h. sports car and bought a 1954 Morris Minor - the split-screen one, with the noisy 803 c.c. engine. It's "just for the winter", he says.
After the laughter had died away, he pointed out that the comprehensive insurance policy for the Minor costs him a little over £11, against the sports car's £40; and it does something like 40 m.p.g. on the cheapest grade of petrol. The maximum speed is unknown, although the speedo has shown 70 m.p.h. on a motorway. Its capital value is £100. (approx. £1500 today).

Since the maximum advisable speed in third gear is only 40 m.p.h. the acceleration is dead slow, although in traffic this doesn't matter overmuch. It can still cover his daily 18 miles into London and the 18 miles back in the same time as the sports car. On a 250-mile trip to Cornwall, it took 7 hours - about half an hour longer than its predecessor normally required.

He reckons he's stumbled on the best way of living with the old-fashioned British roads - by driving an old-fashioned car'.
