Smoking on cold start after oil change

Post by BedfordRob »

After changing the oil and fitting a spin on oil filter converstion kit my moggie now smokes heavilly (grey smoke) on start up. It clears after about 5 minutes and only reappears when the car is left overnight. The oil level is below the max line. The engine has 46K from new and is in good condition and runs well.

Can anyone suggest what to do???

Are you maybe using thinner oil than before?

Oil on startup usually indicates worn valve guides. Was the old oil particularly dirty when you removed it?
Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.

Oil smoke usually has a blue tinge to it. But if it's heavy on startup then it sounds very much like valve stem oil seals. My mum's 1.6 Sierra does it. Don't tell anyone, but my 1380 does it too sometimes.......... *shhh*

Nothing to worry about really, just an annoyance. It's not really worth taking the head off/apart to fix it unless something else need doing too.

Did it really not smoke at all before as 5minutes of heavy smoke is quite a bit, as Kate says you haven`t changed to a much thinner oil have you ?

The smoke is excessive and it was not doing it before.

I used 15/50 Halford mineral oil.

Any other thoughts??

smoke

GREY smoke is usual on start up during colder weather so your
change to a spin off filter may have coincided with the advent of
colder weather?? Oil smoke is usually more blueish. Is your
oil level dropping more quickly than it did before the conversion??
