I would like to see said experts repairing cars either on you tube or here, in the metal as it were, so when I need to change my crankdinkdoodlethingy on the subwoofcamsprocket, I can actually see someone do it and copy said myself.

Should 'concours' Minor's have their engine bays finished in gloss paint?

Starter for ten!
Further investigations uncovered it was an inside job!!

The bodyshell was rotated on a "spit" in the spray booth, so the engine bay would be the same colour as the rest of the body.

Mike

Colour agreed, but to what finish?

Shiny gloss (bulkhead & engine bay floor)

All well and good if it WAS gloss, but if it wasn't.....

Does "concours" mean "as it left the factory" ?!

I've had a couple of very good original Minors, and spent a while cleaning the engine bays. Yes of course its the same gloss paint as the rest of the body, but with very little prep and care involved. Obviously all the flatting and prep was on the exterior panels and the engine bay just got painted, so was a slightly textured orange peel finish with a few bits of dust and a paint run or two here and there.

"Does "concours" mean "as it left the factory" ?!"

Well, in theory yes. But as we all know a car fresh off the production line would not fare well against the lavishly prepared concours cars. I heard one definition of concours, a few years back being 'as the factory would produce a car for a motorshow' ie: rather more care involved, or at least they'd flat off the runs in the engine bay.

(Having said that I recently encountered a modern Citroen which had no colour coat in the engine bay, just the base coat and some overspray round the inner wings. But who buys a new car because of the shiny engine bay finish anyway....).
cheers
Iain

lots of modern cars have barely any paint other than the outside finish...

Under the interior trim in my red focus is the white primer coat, but the engine bay is painted

Saves 27p a car, and when you make 100,000 a year thats a reasonable saving :D
