Hi Folks, can anyone give me a ball park figure for the cost of having new main and big end shells fitted before I start getting quotes from local garages?

If the crankshaft needs a regrind, which is normal when fitting new shells, then the engine will have to come out, so the price will depend on that. Go straight for the quotes, you'll need to do that in the end whatever is said here!

To fit new MAIN shells - the engine has to come out anyway. So - it's not generally worth it -a reground exchange crank makes much more sense. You will also need a new oil pump - and check if the filter is correctly assembled - this is the most common cause of bearing wear on the A series engine, apart from running low on oil of course. So about £150 for parts and a couple of day's work for you, or one day for a competent garage.
