How critical would you say it is to keep the original mesh between the pinion and the rack when dismantleing and overhauling the steering rack?

Don't understand 'original mesh'...... as part of the overhaul you will be resetting the pre-load shims.

I have a feeling that you can put the rack in the other way round so it engages on the less worn teeth.
Just a vague memory and might apply to another car :)
