Steering - new column, old rack - fit?

Post by T100SS »

Hi
in the vain chance anyone might pick up on this, I've just been led a dance regarding some spares. I have a post 59 steering column in a post 59 car. Correct. But a vendor of spares sent me a pre 59 rack. Apart from various other hassle this has caused, I now cannot get the column onto the splined stub in the rack. Are they compatible?

Column splines have never changed as far as I know..... The only difference I think is the thread of the track rods/track rod ends..........

Is there any reason you have not changed it for a post '59 rack? On the face of it, that would be the safest option.

The only difference in the columns is that the early columns had a keyway to fit the flat steering wheel and the later columns had splines to take the dished wheel. All the columns should fit all the racks.

That's the VERY early column. You probably need to open up the slot a little. And of course align the rack (leave the clamps loose) with the column.

Pre-59 columns had a non self-cancelling indicator switch, whereas post 59 were self-cancelling, but the splines are all the same (we have a post 59 column on our 1958 car!)
