Water Pump Pulley

I am planning to change the water pump and housing on my 1098. Got the old one off and removed the fan blades but the pulley is stuck like stuff on a thingy. What's the best way to remove it as I don't want to damage it. The handbook says "pull or tap off" but I think that was how you did it when it was new, not after 50 years. Should I buy a hub puller or will that just damage the pulley? Tips from the experts gratefully received.

Hi Dave,

Put the water pump back on the block and try genly tapping the pulley to see if it loosens it. You could apply gentle heat, preferably with a hot air gun to see if that aids removal. The pulley is only held on by rusting, and should, in theory, just drop off the water pump flange.

It is just 'stuck' - so it really shouldn't be that hard to remove. Soak it in release oil over night - then start 'tapping' It doesn't need a puller......

If you've got a vice, you could put something under two sides of the pulley (strips of wood or something) with the strips sat on the jaws of the vice, and the waterpump hanging in the 'mouth'. Then you can gently tap the centre so that the pump drops into the mouth of the vice.

The wood should protect the pulley flange sufficiently.

Without a vice, do the same, but with house bricks to support the strips.

...and be sure to put a little grease on there when reassembling so you don't have this problem again!

Two days of penetrating oil and a 2 1/2 club hammer with the pulley supported on wood finally did the trick. Mind you, if I'd realised that just the pulley part came off and it was not not actually part of the hub that is mounted on the spindle, it might have been a slightly easier job. Still that's what it's all about - live and learn.
