Stainless rear window frame for convertible
Hi. can anyone help? I have seen some convertibles - including 'Miriam' on Lovejoy which have a stainless top frame to the rear windows to match the front door frames. I assumed that this was gleaned from the rear door frame of a four-door saloon, but having acquired a pair i find they are a different profile, although appear to be the correct length. Has anyone fitted stainless frames to a convertible - and if so - How and where did you source them from? My car is a 1954 'converted' Series II convertible.
Thanks
Colin

Ahh , did they use later cars where profile might be a better fit , or a change in the shape of the glass or hood to fit the frame !

Re: Stainless rear window frame for convertible
Hi and thanks for your reply
As this is a replica convertible - i wonder what's left when they chop the roof off, i.e would these rear side screens be left from the original saloon or would they have been sourced from another car? That said, the hood is a perfect fit to the screen and I would imagine there is only one size of rear screen to cut down manufacturing costs, so i doubt if there would be one size for the saloon and another for the convertible?
Cheers

Re: Stainless rear window frame for convertible
bizarrely, saloons and convertibles always had painted window frames, but travellers, 4 doors, and LCV's had stainless frames.
LCV's doors are the same as 4 door front doors, however traveller doors are the same as 2 door and convertibles. So stainless frames can be taken from a traveller and fitted to 2 doors and convertibles.

Oh, ok! Well they can have SS frames pinched off a 4 door, i've certainly seen a few that way.Rasputin wrote:Lcv`s had painted frames

Yes they can,I have a pair of stainless frames from a four door, that might be going on my pick up.

The rear window frames and glass from the saloon arent used on the conversion.Certainly not on mine anyway. They come as part of the kit or can be bought seperately.

Thanks for all your replies, guys. I know the situation re the front frames (I think) and the car has come with stainless frames on the front doors, but it is stainless frames (or stainless covers) for the the rear window frames. If Tysonn is right and the frames were sourced from another car when the car was converted to a tourer - what car would they come from? Another genuine convertible perhaps? I've not seen the rear frames listed as part of the conversion package. I wonder if Charles Ware or Canterbury Convertibles could shed any light.

ESM list CONV116 and 117 rear sidescreen metal frame,CONV118 top rubber channel,CONV 120 lower rubber channel,CONV 131 rear window glass etc.All the major suppliers sell them. This is whats on mine. You could always buy the frames and have them chrome plated?I may even do this on mine as I've already replaced the front frames with stainless.

Thanks Tysonn
I didn' t realise that the frames came separately - as i'd said, i mistakenly thought a quick fix was going to be the top stainless channel from the rear four door frame, which all unscrews. Perhaps, given that it seems to be the right length it could be carefully cut and bent to fit, the gaps soldered and as they only cost me £4 for the pair it's worth a try.
