Of course you do -but in fact they check online to see if it has MOT and Insurance - so the paper docs are not actually needed. R

Yes - they check 'on-line' at the PO. The lady just handed me back the documents without even glancing at them.

If you apply for a disc half way through the month then the disc will issued to start for the 1st of the next. i.e. Applied 18th June disc issued wont start till 1st July. Don't ask why it's what what is laid out in issuing regulations daft i agree. As regards P O's checking documents they are supposed too both paper and computer system some do some don't, ever wondered why some people can get tax when there not insured you'd be amazed.

Will reading the directgov page resolve this argument about when you can tax a vehicle from?
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/Ow ... /DG_069680

says:

If your tax is due to run out at the end of the month, you can renew it from the fifth day of the month.

If your vehicle has been untaxed, because you’ve just bought it, the tax disc has run out or a SORN is in force, you can tax from the first day of the month in which you apply.

If you want the tax disc to start on the first day of the next calendar month, you cannot tax your vehicle more than two days in advance.

TBH, I have never heard of anyone being pulled over for not displaying a tax disk.

I think the police are far too busy to notice. As long as its insured, I wouldnt stress if you tax disk hasnt arrived in time.

In fact, for those with cars built before 1960, what is the point in getting a tax disk? I mean, you dont need to pay any road tax, and at one time it ws to check if you had an MOT etc. However, cars built before 1960 no longer need an MOT. I do have my car taxed (1955), but I dont see the point in applying for one really.

In fact, the last time my car was taxed, was I believe in the 80s, so the tax office told me! I think the former owners didnt bother getting one, I mean, what is the point other than causing a lot of hassle. (I had to go all the way to Manchester to the tax office, just to change my vehicle class as historic!)

It's an offence under the road traffic act to use a vehicle on the road while not displaying a tax disc weather it's free or not. All Government and Crown Vehicles (i e Police) are tax free but have to display a disc to comply with the Law.

Dvla and P O rules don't always align with the road traffic act.

This thread is getting daft and going round in circles.
