I can't turn the heater off coz I don't have a valve so I need to temporarily alter my plumbing or order a little under bonnett jobby, another £20, but when I get in from work I'm cream crackerd and my 7 year old wants to play trampolining on me,hence progress is slow , and he is another reson why i'm oppting to fit yet another electric fan infront of the rad instead of a metal finger chopping original type

Just think - when you fit that - you will have a Cooper S thermostat in your engine - good for an extra 5 bhp I expect........

Heater hoses squeezed off, 72% stat fitted, took it for a nice run, guess what the temp guage went right up, though it didn't boil over or appear to loose any water, took the stat out topped it up with water ran it around duel carriage ways (also giving me a chance to play with my overdrive )country lanes into town sitting in traffic and back agian cool as a cucumber switched the fan on in traffic but i'de expect that .
And when I turned it off it didn't diesel on at all .
Thinking of selling it and getting a beetle

it doesn't feel like it i could feel the heat coming through the body drilled some holes round the stat to increase the flow and put it back in and it was bang on the N when driving with no fan at all, left it ticking over and it started to rize switched the fan on back to N, a bit different and I'm sure many would think ill of my actions , going to check the actual temp in the week when i pick up a thermometer , thanx for all your advice

If there is no bypass hose - the stat drilling is fine. But do whatever works for you!
