1/2 Traveller wood replacement - amateur alert :P

Post by Sparticus »

Hiya,

I have a traveller that really needs the wood replacing on one side...the woodwork on the drivers side is fine and very solid however on the passenger side these bits are starting to go soft/completely soft: middle rail front and rear, rear pillar where it joins to the middle rail, bottom foot step bit, front pillar, front wheel arch segment.....

So my question is...has anyone replaced half the side of the car and is is possible without the hand of god?

I replaced one side of wood on my Traveller years ago. It is possible to do whilst leaving the roof and other side in place.

The side is held on by five bolts to the B pillar ( three visible ouside the car and two hidden inside by the window felts), three screws from the bottom step to the sill floor edge, a line of screws join the wheel arch to the steel inner wing, a coach bolt joins the corner post to the boor corner mounting panel, the gutter is held on by a row of nails. (The gutter is a "U" shaped section with the inner part tapped down to cover the nails) Pry up the folded over part of the gutter to reveal the nails.

Also, the traveller side of wood is screwed to the roof support wooden beams and to the rear boot panel support wooden frame. There is also a couple of corner brackets inside the car- one is removable. And of course remove the rear door on that side.

You will need to remove the rear wing first which is held to the wooden arch by wood screw bolts.

Be prepared for some welding though as a rotten side of wood usually conceals some rusty metalwork.

You can get a complete side of wood from Travellers Timbers and if the car is a daily driver a "seconds" side is a good cheaper option.

Good luck and ask plenty of questions on here!
Cheers John - all comments IMHO
