midget 1275 questions

Post by welshrat »

I managed to pick up a midget 1275 block today for £50, no head or sump tho. I do have a complete 950 minor engine sitting in the garrage as well. So can anyone let me know if the sumps are the same and what head would you recommend I look for, guessing that the 950 head will not do the job.

Sumps are very different and 1275 items very hard to find. Head should be a 12G940, so no, your 948 head is not suitable.

They are going for silly money at present, been looking for one for a long time but all too rich for my blood. Managed to buy this one from a chap about 300 yards away from where I live, only last week I was considering travelling 120 miles to pick one up! So if there is anyone out there with a garrage full of midget sumps and heads (possibly BMC) who would like to make a donation to the welshrat minor/miner fund please let me know.

As PSL says, 1275 Midget//Marina/Ital sumps are becoming VERY hard to find now. I was looking for one a while ago and if it wasn't for a good friend who had a knackered 1275 Midget block in his shed with a good sump attached, I would still be looking now.

A possible alterntive, although I have not tried it, is a sump from a 1300 Maestro. I have attached a couple of pics here. The flange profile looks to be the same as the Midget/A series in line block, and the main bearing recesses are the right size too, I think. You should be able to pick one up in a scrap yard for a few quid and, if it does not fit, you won't have lost a great deal in trying. My only concern would be whether the shallower end would foul any part of the crank. It shouldn't but cannot offer any guarantees having not tried it out. Good luck in your search

Same crank - so no problem there. It looks slightly deeper? But perhaps just the angle of the camera shot.

Crisis over, went back to see the chap I bought the engine off, he managed to find the sump, only wanted a fiver for the time spent looking for it. Thank you for all your responses.
