jacking points

Hi to all you moggy fans and owners.I am about to start looking for my oil leak,coming somewhere just behind the sump.I have ramps, and axle stands.Where would you suggest are good jacking poibts i can use with my trolley jack.This is the first moggy i have owned since 1974 when i was 22,so its now all new to me???????????

I use a piece of wood on top of the trolley jack to spread the load and then jack up under a chassis leg. Most Minors leak from the rear engine oil seal as it is an Archimedes screw arrangement which wears. If you manage to stop the leak let us know you did it!

I don't have the answer to curing the leak but I think it would entail removing the engine from the car so I just put a drip tray underneath.

Rule 1 is never rely on jacks to work under a car! I see you have ramps and stands, so be sure to use them. You can drive onto the ramps, leaving just the other end to jack up.

Now, where to jack? As suggested, a block of wood to spread the load. At the front I always position the wood so that it is on the front tie-rod bracket, and also covering both edges of the chassis leg. At the rear, you can put the jack under the mounting plates for the rear shock absorbers (talking car, I'm not sure about LCV), or, if the jack has a large cup, it will sit nicely around the bottom of the dif housing in the centre of the axle.

As regards the oil leak, it can be cured completely, but needs a re-con crank and matching bearings. To reduce it, make sure that the oil is not over-filled, and that the crankcase breathing system is in good order - there are plenty of other posts on that subject.
