Has this only recently started to happen?

Is it the correct variant of the correct (SU) petrol pump? Many modern replacements are designed to give a much higher output pressure.

The most likely cause is either a tiny piece of dirt, or wear of the needle and /or seat. If you take the needle seat out of the lid, it is strongly recommended that you use either the correct special tool, or as a minimum a closely fitting box spanner or hex socket. The valve body is very easily distorted if you go for it with a mole wrench. Check the fuel level, as shown in the manual, and if anything, err on the side of setting it a bit low (i.e. a bigger diameter test bar).

Spares from the usual suspects or direct from the people who've bought the SU rights, http://www.sucarb.co.uk/

It can really only overflow/flood if the needle valve is passing.....assuming the float bowl is vertical of course? Take the needle right out and inspect - does it have a ridge worn on it?

my fuel pump packed up recently, and i replaced it with a new one, there after i had fuel bowl flooding, the only way i could stop it was to reset the float using a slightly larger diameter bar, ie a bit more clearance, could have been more pressure from the new pump?
