anybody know the output of the alternator from ESM?

Post by tomothy94 »

i'm thinking of getting an alternator, but on ESM it doesn't state the output the alternator gives... i have read somewhere that it is only 36a which i don't feel is much more than the standard dynamo... if i am wrong please tell me and correct me! :) anyway does anybody know the output of it and if it is enough to support a cigarette lighter with an inverter?

Probably stating the obvious, but have you tried ringing ESM to ask them what the output is?

i have yes, but the person said they weren't sure. they said that 18acr meant an output of 18 amps, but that can't be right, otherwise there'd be no point in having an alternator over the dynamo! anyway with VAT the alternator kit would cost a ridiculous amount - im planning on getting a secondhand mini alternator and bracket and doing the rest myself. i'm saving over 60 quid and it'll probably last longer!

That certainly isn't right.......good old ESM ! But the max output doesn't really matter - the point about an alternator is that it charges ALL the time the engine is running - even when idling. So in town driving the battery doesn't go flat. Any alternator will be ~ 50% more powerful than a dynamo.

...note that price is for fitting too. Much cheaper if you do it yourself, though can't remember how much.
