Bumpers

Post by plastic_orange »

Where's the best place to get good quality bumpers? I've just returned a pair that were poor quality, and supplier checked their stock to find they were all the same poor quality (refund on it's way). This was components that were chromed in the UK, so is there any hope for the future.

I got some double plated over riders from bull motif about 10 years ago and they have been well worth the extra price at the time, still as good as new and the car is outside most of the time. I cant say anything about what they are selling now though.

The best thing to do is buy new old stock or an excellent secondhand part. Modern chrome just isn't up to the job and will have rust blemishes breaking out in no time.

Ebay, autojumbles, old-school scrapyards. To preserve the chrome wipe it over frequently with an oily cloth or, as some owners recommend, vaseline in winter.

Applying wax to the chrome when you wax the car can also help protect the chrome.

I am trying another idea on modern chrome. I have applied a couple of coats of clear coat paint to the chrome bumpers.
Cheers John - all comments IMHO

Like clear lacquer? Sounds a good idea as long as it doesn't take the shine from the chrome.

I've tried a couple of coats on some new bumpers and some over riders on the convertible and it doesn't seem to have taken the shine off.

Thanks for the tip. What is the make of paint you use and is it easily obtainable?
