boot lid seal

stupid boy here. I took the rubber boot lid seal off to paint the inside of the boot and now I want to put it back, I cant remember which way round it goes. The car is a 1957 saloon and the seal is the early sort that fits on the flange around the boot opening. Does the lip of the seal point inwards or outwards?? Thanks.

Well, on my '57 it points inwards and seems to do the job.
