Unfortunately for the engines fitted to our cars, anything going over 60,000 miles means the engine is coming to the end of its working life without the need for major overhaul. The fact is old engines are prone to wear out faster, and the odometer only having 5 digits says volumes about the life expectancy.

This is why it is considered an achievement when a car passes 100,000 miles. However in this day and age it is outdated to think that an engine is worn when it comes up to that figure. Modern engines should easily be able to do 300,000 miles without major work, probably even more.

Ultimately it depends on how the car has been looked after and the sort of life it has had, for example if you do a lot of short journeys the engine will wear out faster than one which does 500 miles a day.

Then again, if a Minor has covered 90,000 miles on its original engine, another 10,000 shouldn't be hard to cover.
