Ethanol in petrol

Post by JOWETTJAVELIN »

I'm surprised there hasn't been a recent thread on this topic. It's going to affect us all next year when the govt. in their infinite wisdom raise the level of ethanol in 95 octane petrol from 5% to 10% (super remains ethanol-free), when most of the world is starving.

What are the true effects of ethanol on old cars? It's quite a worry and I have heard conflicting advice. I want to keep driving and enjoying my car without my mechanical bits being affected by rotten modern plant fuel.

Those of you keeping your car tucked indoors waiting for a nice sunny Sunday to bring it out may find you ain't gonna get anywhere... :P

How will it affect daily drivers, as I understand it the risk decreases if the fuel is regularly replenished.

There is some consolation in the fact that a petrol available in the 1950s was Cleveland Discol - 'the alcohol blend for greater economy and high-mileage men'.

Word from the FBHVC at a seminar which I recently attended is that the situation is being carefully monitored. Several reasons were given as to why there was no cause for concern at this stage. I will try to get a copy of the notes.

Hello Jowett Javelin,

I hear that the government is going to delay raising the limit to 10% as it is going to be detrimental to a very large number of cars. How long I don't know?
