Wiring Loom (PLEASE: URGENT HELP NEEDED)

Post by Lowriderlad »

Hello there, My morris was built between 62 and 63 and originally had the brake light flasher indicators, Over the years she has been modified somewhat messily to use the amber flashers all in one unit and a new circular relay. I have been experiencing some major electrical faults so about two weeks ago I ordered a new loom from ESM minors. I opted for the 64 type with the wiring for the amber flashers but on arrival it appears to be different in more places than once. The headlights seem to (On the new loom) require a relay or controller for dipped/main beam which im assuming is just to take the load of the switch. and the starter type is wired for a ignition barrel starter wheras my car has a pull start solenoid which I would really like to keep. How is it possible to modify my new loom to fit the car and how can I get hold of the headlight flashers? I really dont want to have to buy a new loom. Yours faithfully, Budd.

The headlights don't have any relay involved. Just tape up the connection for the starter solenoid - and continue to use the pull start.

Have you got a wiring diagram for the old and new looms for comparison?

I had a similar problem where my 62 car had amber indicators added and I modified the loom to something similar to the later cars. I have made a coloured diagram that you are welcome to a copy of. I also have diagrams of early and late wiring if you want them as well. PM me with your email address.

Barry's simplified/easy-to-follow 'standard' diagram is at the top of this section............ Print off a copy and laminate it - and keep it in the car.

You will find several differences, the dash on your car has all different switches, the new loom will have lugar connectors were as your car will have screw in connectors. Have you fitted or started fitting it to the car yet? I would suggest contacting ESM and seeing if they will change the loom to the proper one, you can even have one custom made to your requirements (extra wires for radio, heated windows indicators etc) through them.

Well at least you will be able to carefully cut off the lugar connectors were required and strip the wire back to fit the older screw type switches. The most difficult bit is likely to be the solenoid, I think you make have to lengthen the wires on the new loom to reach the pull start one.

Do take your time and dont cut anything off until you are at the required switch incase they have also been up dated!!
