Help Please - Which Starter Motor (9 or 10 tooth)

Post by Tony »

I am fitting a 1098 engine and gearbox into my Morris Series 2 car. I have a number of starter motors some have 9 teeth and some 10 teeth on the gear that meshes with the ring gear. My ring gear has 104 teeth. Can anyone tell me please which is the correct starter to use? Thanks.

It doesn't really matter - use the best looking one you have - and if there is still a choice go for the 9 teeth.

Check the voltage stamped on the starter motor case, you may find that the 9T is an early 6V starter and the 10T motors are 12V. Early 6V versions of the side valve engine had 80T flywheel and the Series MM version had 102T flywheel.
I will check my stock tomorrow.

Many thanks for the advice Mike. I have just checked and the 9T I have chosen is fortunately 12v. Cheers, Tony :D

The 9T was replaced with the 10T when the starter needed changing, and after making the change our 1380 spins over noticeably faster with the 10T starter. That is the better one for me.

Not with a decent sized battery it doesn't! Not even with 10.7:1 CR either! I use an 065 battery (55Ah) that has almost 500 'cranking amps', against the standard 038 (36Ah) that has only 320. Yes, it is slightly more expensive by about £10/15, but it's at least 6 years old, so £2/year extra for real peace of mind, even at this time of year and weather. A real bargain to my mind.
