Damn doors again!

Post by Boomlander »

Still can't get Jethro's doors to close with a pull on the straps. I've fitted smaller aperture seals and adjusted the striker plates in, out and shake it all about but the only way the doors will latch is when they are pushed or pulled shut and then the handle operated, then the door pin engages with the striker and everything clicks shut. Am I missing something or do I need to replace the door mechanisms (the pins in the door lock actually look as if they have been ground at some time!) Both doors line up perfectly with the body when closed but the only time I have been able to slam shut them is when I tried it without door seals and of course they then rattled like hell! Any suggestions?
Thanks Folks :(

If the doors will close and latch without the seal -- but not so with the seal -- it sounds as if the striker plates are too snug -- in other words, they need to be loosened and adjusted outward. One way to approach this is to adjust them all the way out, tighten and see if the door will close and latch. If it does, but it's not snug on the seal, adjust back in till you find the sweet spot. Don't forget that the latching mechanism also wants some lubrication -- on both the striker plate and the latch. You don't want so much that it makes a mess when your jacket brushes up against it -- but some. White lithium grease is often used. A door that is otherwise uncooperative will often fall into line with just a touch of something slippery on it. Of course you also need to make sure that the up/down alignment is correct, and that the interior linkage (to the lock and handle) is working well and fully lubricated.
