fuel reading

Post by Tes 1 »

Hi.All This is a real poser question??.A 1956 morris minor fuel gauge is reading half full when the tank level fuel sender unit is set to empty whilst i am holding it.i have tested the fuel gauge by earthing the wire to the body and the petrol gauge goes to full and when i remove the earth it reads empty which is what it should do. the tank sender is new so why am i getting a reading at half full when it should read empty?.any idears.Cheers.

Is the tank sender compatible with a 5 gallon tank or 6.5 gallon tank?
I don't know if it makes any difference but it might.

The new repro sender units are not good. Try to get a used original, easily recognised by the aluminium float.

Some gauges work off straight battery voltage. Later (date? year?) gauges require "stabilized" voltage. Is the sender the same for both?

A '56 would be a 12 volt gauge. 1098 black speedos would have a 10 volt output stabiliser
