Seam sealer and gear box cover

Hi all, well some things are going back on my project soon - front wings, etc... and have started to think about seamsealer. Now, from reading uip here and elsewhere I have decided on tubes of tiger seal for between the wings and body, over various weld seams, etc... indeed I'll have a day going round with the caulking gun and a gloved finger covered in thinners lol. BUT there is one thing ~I'm not sure how to seal...

I took out the inside-the-car big gear box cover plate and associated brake master cylinder cover - underneath these was a sort of white semi hard thick layer of some sort of sealant... not sure what... when I replace theses panels should I replace that sealer (which is now scraped, degreased and freshly painted)? If so, can I just use tiger seal again?

Oh, and whilst I'm here - I decided to use just tubes of caulk gun tiger seal, there isn't anywhere that NEEDS brushable sealnt for some reason is there?

Never bothered using sealant on the gearbox cover, just tighten it down with bolts instead of those brass set screws and it will ome off much easier in future. The carpet will stop the draughts.

Without sealant of some sort. what's going to stop the water??

Use dum-dum or something similarly non setting. Tiger seal will act like an adhesive and you'll never get the cover off again.....

also glue wings to body if used I think some people have used a cartridge for sealing gutters use paraffin or white spirit to clean not thinners as depending on paint finish may melt paint or react with it

Never had a problem with water - repelled by all the oil!

Ah, yes, never thought of glue properties... I actually have special window stuff - silicone free, which never sets... acts a bit like dum-dum, might use that on wings - so seam sealer only to be used on actual seams then??

Thats correct. I would use brushable sealer as its easier to get in all the places a cartridge can not go and will seal a lot better, unless you are very good with a cartridge gun

There are strips of rubber between the floor pan and the gearbox cover, they locate along the recessed pressings on the floor.
Without them there is every chance that water will enter the chassis legs.

Hi, thanks for the advice - does the rubber go under all the 'screwed' areas? Or just on the outside edge of the chassis legs? Can you get the rubbers anywhere as can't see them on bull motiff or esm?

There are 4 strips in total, 2 each side of a leg. I haven't seen them being sold anywhere. The rubber is solid and measures approximately 8mm thick, 16mm wide and the length of the recess in the floor pressing, you could possibly make some if needed.
