DA air sander

Hi, on advice I purchased a small aldi compressor, which has been brilliant so far, but I want to buy a mini da sander... I know I can't run a big sander with this compressor, but wondered if you could give me advice on what sort of min da sander I could run, the tech specs of the compressor are:

motor rating 1.8kw (is that 2.5 hp?)
intake capacity 270 litres per min
delivery rate 90l per min at 7 bar

For example, would this really work: Bearing in mind it is not for the whole car, but for small areas that need taking to the metal (rusty bits):

Oh, and do the figures above mean this compressor is a 9.5 cfm compressor? Thanks!

Hello Arthur,

the sander is quoted at 2.something cfm, so the compressor should cope, although the second part @ 70Litres\min doesn't make sense.

746watts = 1 H.P so your motor size is about right, but I can't compute litres per minute to cubic feet per minute?

According to my litle reference book, divide l/min by 28.3 to get cfm. ie 70l/m is 2.47cfm

Right, so since this is a 270 litre per minute suction model, then this is roughly a 9.5 cfm compressor?

This is right isn't it? The CFM comes from the displacement of air - this is a 270 litre intake model, meaning roughly 9.5 cfm. So, enough for all my needs... even a small da sander! Whoopee!

However... the 'free air' is only 90 litres...

Which figure do I use to work out what tools it will run? All the cheap compressors just say cfm and a figure, they don't actually say what the cfm means, air intake or free delivery??

Confused - 90 litres a minute won't run anything!!!

Hello Arthur,

the free air figure is the one you should work on.

However you are probably better off with an angle grinder for getting rid of rust patches, especially with 'strip and clean' discs, which will remove paint and rust effectively and leave an excellent surface for painting. (Much more effective than the toughest wire brush.)
