Etch Primer?

Hi, now I know I need to etch primer, filler prime, flat and cellulose on top - BUT, what SORT of etch primer? Some say 1k some 2k, some say acryllic... I don't know if it makes any difference? Help! Also, it seems VERY expensive, when it comes to my salooons respray in the spring I'll get tubs of it, but for small bits I presume aerosols are actually more sensible do you think? Thanks!!

Don't get involved with '2k' - it will kill you...... I have no idea what '1k' is........

Don't just go for the cheapest. Some of it is rubbish! Like water almost.

Some of them say 1K, would one for acryllic paint be suitable for celly topcoats?

if you are doing a bare metal respray,which it sounds like, you are better off using the same paint for all application ie celly or synthetic or 2k so that you don't suddenly get incompatability problems.same for thinners use the same make and type they have been made to go together and tested for application problems,I wouldn't mix and match,too expensive nowadays to find crazing and sinkage in the top coat requiring stripping back again ,Been there never again.

If you are only doing touch-up work at the moment - just wipe the bare metal with a rust preventive (phosphoric acid type) - this etches the metal - then when dry, overcoat with spray primer and carry on.

You really only need an etch primer if you have gone down to bare metal. Use a cellulose primer if you are spraying cellulose paint, and an acrylic primer is you intend to spray acrylic paint. Don't mix them otherwise they react.

Thanks everybody, I did as you said BMC on a couple of spots, and seems a good finish - couldn't believe the price of paint though, 16 quid for 400ml, the bloks said that a generic colour can be done for 14 quid a litre!!! I think when I respray my saloon I'll use a generic colour lol.

BMC: I used Vactan as the rust preventer - is that okay?

Try hibuild primer if you have any pitting etc 2 pack has a cyanide base Marcell guest in Manchester is quite good for paint and they mix it for you if you supply number codes
