Dizzy in bits, oops

Hi All
More help required on my 1959 Traveller which by the way has had a 1098 engine fitted prier to my purchase.

While stripping the 25D dizzy and driving out the shaft I fumbled the cam and centrifugal timing control; as I caught it.
I am now not sure if I have lost a washer see (picture)

Arrow 2, Should there be a curved nylon washer on the shaft by itself or should it also have a washer here?
I know the nylon washer goes here despite the fact it’s not shown on the diagram, but is that all there is between the shaft and the base of the outer body

Arrow 3, I have the washer from here but thought there might be similar at the opposite end under the nylon washer

Arrow 3 points to the upright forked bit that is not on my dizzy, comments please (not rude)

Following the information in previous threads I take it this is a 1962 to 67 Dizzy, and again any comments or corrections.

This Traveller has become a bit of a money pit, just found out after having the head skimmed that it has hair line cracks under and through the 2 of the valve seats, but I love her.

The diagram is not of a 25D........ why on earth did you take it apart like this ?? I've never stripped a dizzy to this extent - what are you hoping to achieve??

Item 3 is the replacement drive dog set and includes the drive dog, taper pin and thin washer. It is common to the DKYH4A, DM2P4 and 25D distributors and probably others in the BMC range.
The forked bit is not on the 25D but is the terminal for the LT lead with a spade connector.
The contact breaker points come in a ready assembled set, all you have to do is undo the top nut and washers and fit the wires from the condenser and LT terminal under the plastic washer then set the gap.
The metal pole should be insulated from the CB and LT wires

I had no option but to go with the total strip down as it had been standing for god knows how many years with the dizzy cap off and hanging to one side, I could see that it was gritty and dirty, to have thrown a new set of points on and run it like that would have been foolish.
I have obviously miss understood the earlier threads that I read, I had thought the DM2P4 and the 25D where similar, if not the same!
Now you have told me I have the wrong diagram can you point me in the right direction to find one?

They are 'similar' - just not identical ! I would have simply washed it all out with various spray cleaners/spray greases until it ran smoothly. Pretty sure this is a 25D if it helps any...... http://www.moss-europe.co.uk/Shop/ViewP ... exID=17098

Yes it is a 25D as it is written on the body, thanks for the two sites, the first one does show the contact breaker base plate the same as mine, bit it still does not show the nylon cup shaped washer on the main shaft! The second site has resolved the problem that I realised I had, that I could be 180deg out when I refitted it

Hello reg,

I wonder what this distributor should fit as it's specifications seem unusual.

408489A (25D4) maximum mechanical advance 17 degrees (distributor so twice for engine advance) @ 3,200 rpm (6,400 engine) which is high?
40849B (could that be what you read as H?) maximum mechanical advance 15-17 degrees@ 3,2000 rpm.

Sounds like good advance! Very little static advance needed with that - ideal. Don't worry about 180 degrees out - you just swap the HT leads around!

I was wrong, it is listed as A40\1100 and Morris Minor. Difficult to reconcile with maximum advance at 6,400 rpm??

As an aside, I recently bought a Ferguson tractor (1948) and the (Lucas) distributor shaft was so sloppy. A quick strip down and I was pleasantly surprised to find a simple ball race as the top bearing, and better still, the local bearing shop had one off the shelf. Cheap fix and a serviceable distributor. Some times older is better from a maintenance point of view?

I'm thinking the advance is listed for the dizzy (so yes X 2) - but the revs are listed for the engine revs..... It's very normal to have the full advance in place by ~ 3000 rpm.

the site you mention is the one i got the year of the dizzy from, I have copied below.

40849A and B 25D4 1962-67 Austin, Morris A 40, 1100, and Minor 1000 & Traveller.
I know that mine is H ie40849H so does this mean the letters are for various amounts/speed of automatic advance?

Thinking again about the 17 degrees advance........ perhaps that IS the total engine advance. Can you tell us what number is stamped on the leading advance weight - the one with the 'toe' on it which contacts with the stop at max advance ? Is it stamped '17' ??

the suffix letter is a variation I believe but the list I have at home and the list in the link does not mention 'H'. What number is stamped on the beak of the rotor (advance figure)?

BMCE, the chart is unclear but by checking it is indeed distributor speed. See the graph enclosed and cross reference it to the link and you will see what I mean. Incidentally it illustrates what I've been going on about with regard to different distributors, this graph and Reg's both 'A' series units but with a 10 degree engine maximum advance variation and at different speeds? OK that doesn't take into account the static timing but similar units are not the same.

that at least ties in with the'B's timing (15-17), the springs and or vacuum unit could be different however, is the van engine a low compression engine?
