Information I have:-
Workshop manual says concave side forward (AA.23) though this also mentions the felt washer so is the older engine.
Haines manual page 27 diagram shows concave side facing forward away from engine.
Haines manual page 40 picture caption says concave side facing back toward engine.
Haines manual page 45 says fit the oil thrower concave side forward
Also I’ve read side with an “F” facing forward, “F” being written on the convex side
I assume as mine has a rubber oil seal with a coiled spring thing in, that my thrower is (going by previous old threads I’ve read) the later flat type, even though it is not perfectly flat and has a slight concave and convex side.
Please, is it “F” facing forward away from engine.
A little second question, my end of camshaft cog has a small piece on the inner outer edge missing, about ¾ inch long by ¼ inch, will this upset the balance and cause vibration

F = forward. It won't cause a balance problem - but how did it get like this - and is there any risk of a crack through the body of the cog?

Thank you very much for your reply can continue with the rebuild now.
By the marks around the rear I think chisel or tyre levers have been used in the past to remove it, with some force!

As to the chisel marks, as it hasn't failed in service, I wouldn't be losing any sleep about how damaged it looks.

" it hasn't failed in service " .... YET. Just check carefully for any crack running through the hub - especially at the keyway. Smooth off any rough edges to make it look 'nice'.

On further inspection the rest of the cog is ok,all I can conclude is that rather than trying to lever the cog off with the pressure as near the camshaft as possible, all the force was applied at the edge where the metal is at its thinnest/weakest causing the piece to crack off.
